What resolution will I actually get?

Whatever the post was published at, up to Instagram's own ceiling of 1080 pixels on the longest side for most uploads. Nothing here can recover detail the platform did not publish in the first place.

Can I download every slide in a carousel at once?

Each slide is offered individually rather than as a bundle. It is a couple more taps, but it means you are not downloading nineteen images to get one.

Why is the image smaller than the original photo?

Instagram re-compresses and resizes images on upload. The file you get back is the platform's version, which is smaller than whatever the photographer started with.

Does this work with profile pictures?

No. This tool takes links to posts. Profile and avatar images are not posts, and they are not offered here.

Can I use a downloaded photo on my own account?

Only with the photographer's permission. A photograph is protected the moment it is taken, and reposting one without permission is a copyright infringement regardless of how it was saved.

About Instagram photo posts

Photo posts are where Instagram began, and they remain the most straightforward thing on the platform: one or more still images, an optional caption, and nothing to stream. The complication is not the format but the number of versions. Every image you upload is stored at several sizes so the app can load a small one on a slow connection and a large one when it can afford to.

Why the size you see is not the size you get

The image rendered as you scroll is deliberately small. The version this tool asks for is the largest the post was published at, which on a modern upload is normally 1080 pixels along the longest edge. It will not match the file that came out of a camera, because Instagram never stored that file.

Carousels

A carousel is a single post containing up to twenty images. Because the whole thing sits behind one link, a tool that does not look inside will hand you only the first slide. Here the post is analyzed first and every image in it is listed, numbered in the order they appear, so you can pick the fourth one without touching the others.

Photographs belong to photographers
